Graphic Impressions Hawthorn Picture Framing and Mirrors
Small brown spots and stains
caused by using non-conservation
mats and backing board.

When to use conservation framing.

Artwork that is valuable, irreplaceable or historically important should always be framed using acid-free materials (mat board, backing board, glass etc) that will not damage the artwork.

The materials used should also protect the artwork from air pollution, dust, mildew, humidity and ultra-violet rays.

Picture restoration.

Paintings and prints that have been damaged can often be cleaned and restored. We will happily advise you and arrange for your artwork to be appraised by one of the restoration artists we work with.

Things to look out for.

Small brown spots on the surface of your artwork are caused by acidic build-up. This is called foxing.

The use of non-conservation quality mats and backing boards in the past can cause these brown stains. The wrong type of glues, adhesives and tape can also cause severe damage because the adhesives harden and become brittle, they change colour and cause staining. And finally the chemicals used in the adhesives give off an acidic gas that will cause the artwork to deteriorate.

If you see any of the above warning signs affecting your artwork then come and see us and we'll happily advise you.

We supply both modern and traditional Bellini frames imported from Italy.
We can clean and restore old prints and paintings.

Bring in your work and we'll advise you.
